about

Who we are

Casa Portal is a retreat homestead shaped by real life, real land, and a shared understanding that meaningful work — whether personal or professional — requires space.

Many people who arrive here are in the middle of something. They may be navigating change, building something they care about, or holding space for others while needing space themselves. Casa Portal was created for that in-between place — when clarity hasn’t arrived yet, but the need to pause is clear.

Here, days are guided by rhythm rather than urgency. Time in nature is unforced. Shared living creates a sense of ease and quiet connection. Here you have the permission to just be. To do nothing.

Casa Portal exists to offer a pause — not away from life, but within it — so people can return to their work, their communities, and themselves with greater steadiness, care, and love.

the Land

Casa Portal sits on private, working land shaped by gardens, pasture, water, and forest. Production gardens supply much of the food that comes from the kitchen, along with beds of cut flowers guests are welcome to pick. In season, strawberries and cherry tomatoes are gathered straight from the garden and often make their way to the table the same day.

Sheep move through open pastures, tending the land as they graze and helping maintain its natural rhythm. The property is intentionally biodiverse — a place where food, animals, and habitat coexist.

A spring-fed pond and a fresh stream draw birds and wildlife throughout the day. More than twenty species of birds can be spotted here, including cardinals, blue jays, and owls. Wildflower meadows bloom with the seasons, crossed by winding paths meant for slow wandering.

Beyond the fields, pine forests and quiet trails stretch far enough to get lost — and found — without direction. People spend time outdoors here not because they are told to, but because the land invites it.

Your Hosts

Melissa

Melissa is the steward of Casa Portal and the shepherd of its sheep. She is a traveler, a seeker, and — like many guests — a lifelong beginner.

Her own retreat journey began without a roadmap, and she continues to learn how to slow down, listen to the land, and follow what feels honest. A certified forest therapy guide, Melissa cares for Casa Portal as a retreat homestead — a place held with curiosity, care, and love, passed on from the previous owners.

She hopes to welcome you here wherever you are on your journey.
Her dog, Shari, will be here too.

Pete is the chef at Casa Portal and Melissa’s life partner. He cooks intuitively, guided by the land, the season, and the people gathered at the table.

Hungarian by heritage, Pete learned to cook from his grandmother and through time on his grandparents’ farm. He has lived and cooked in India and Bali, shaping a quiet, nourishing approach to food rooted in patience and care. At Casa Portal, he tends the gardens and keeps bees, letting what is grown guide the kitchen.

Here, food is the heart of the home — a way people feel cared for, settle in, and share life together.
