The farm

the farm

Casa Portal Retreats is a small, diversified farm in Maine with a long agricultural history. Once a cattle farm and later logged, the land has been gradually restored through years of careful stewardship. Over the past 30 years, the forest has grown back into a biodiverse mix of native Maine trees, now part of the working landscape alongside open pasture. This nature farm retreat offers guests an opportunity to reconnect with the land through an authentic farm stay rooted in sustainability and seasonal living.

Today, the farm includes pasture, production gardens, bees, and a flock of sheep, all managed with a focus on soil health and long-term sustainability. The farm operates as an integrated system, where animals, land, and growing spaces are connected and managed in response to natural patterns and seasonal rhythms. Guests seeking farm retreats or a meaningful farm retreat experience can witness these practices firsthand while enjoying a peaceful wellness farmstay.

The flock at Casa Portal Retreats has been on this land for over 20 years. It began with Navajo-Churro sheep brought from the West and sourced through a local farmers market and was developed by shepherds committed to preserving the breed in the Northeast. Over time, they established and maintained multiple lines, and the flock I now manage continues that stewardship. It remains one of a small number of Navajo-Churro flocks in this region.

Spending time with the animals is an important part of the immersive farm experience, giving visitors a deeper appreciation of traditional farming practices during their farm stay retreat.

the forest

The forest at Casa Portal Retreats has regenerated over the past 30 years into a mix of native Maine trees, including maple, birch, pine, spruce, and fir. After logging, the land was largely left alone to recover on its own, allowing a biodiverse woodland to return naturally. Today, it supports wildlife and plays an important role in the health of the land, making it an ideal setting for a restorative retreat in nature.

The trails were originally logging paths and have gradually become walking trails, connecting the forest, fields, and working areas of the farm. A spring-fed pond, originally created from a natural spring to support the cattle operation, is now used for swimming and is home to trout. The peaceful surroundings create the perfect environment for a farm yoga retreat or anyone seeking mindful travel experiences away from the demands of daily life.
